Het aantal executies in Iran neemt elk jaar toe. In 2023 voerde het land 853 doodvonnissen uit. Dat is een grote stijging ten opzichte van het jaar ervoor, blijkt uit onderzoek van Amnesty International. Het ging vooral om drugsgerelateerde misdrijven.
